Annual CVYS Competitions

Each and every musician will be involved in creating beautiful music as part of the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony. However, there are other ways to enhance your involvement with CVYS that you may or may not already be aware of! For example, each year CVYS holds three different competitions that are open to all CVYS student musicians.

Concerto Competition

For the first round of judging, musicians are asked to prepare a concerto (a music composition that contains orchestral accompaniment) and submit a recording of their performance.

Up to five finalists are chosen for the Concerto Competition Finalist Performance, which will be held in February. On that day, a panel of judges will evaluate the performances and rank the finalists. First, second and third place finalists are awarded cash prizes. In addition, the winner of the competition will get to perform his or her piece at the CVYS Spring Finale Concert.

Student Composition Competition

Aspiring composers are encouraged to prepare original compositions for our annual composition competition. Compositions are evaluated by CVYS music staff, and a winning composition may be selected. If a winner is chosen, the composition is then distributed to the youth symphony in the spring and performed at the May concert.

Student Conductor Competition

Student musicians who are interested in conducting are strongly encouraged to consider entering this competition. During the fall semester, the music director will announce when the conducting competition will take place. It is typically held during a regular Tuesday evening rehearsal. The successful student conductor will have the opportunity to rehearse and conduct a music selection at a future concert.

Now is the time to consider these opportunities and begin preparing for them. If you have any further questions about these competitions, please feel free to contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
